Sometimes, the most meaningful programs start with just one person’s story.
One day, a woman experiencing homelessness arrived at our nonprofit’s doorstep seeking help. As we sat down with her, we asked the same question we ask many in need: “What’s your goal? What do you want most right now?”
She shared her journey — how she had come to Los Angeles from Pennsylvania in search of opportunity, but along the way, things took a difficult turn. After everything she had endured, her answer was simple and heartfelt:
"All I want is a safe way home to my family."
We knew right then we could do more than just offer resources. With the help of our partner, Paradise Baptist Church, we contacted her family, arranged her travel, and purchased her ticket back to Pennsylvania. We made sure she was safely reunited with her loved ones — where she is now surrounded by the care, stability, and love she deserves.
Her handwritten thank-you letter (pictured alongside this post) is a reminder of why we do this work.
That day, we realized this wasn’t just one woman’s story — it’s the reality for many who come to Los Angeles seeking opportunity but find themselves in crisis. From that moment on, we committed to helping others in similar situations find A Safe Way Home.
That first reunion was just the beginning.
We’re building A Safe Way Home into a program that helps more people like her—those who came to Los Angeles with hope, but now face hardship and simply want to return to their loved ones.
Too often, outreach focuses on shelter or food, but the greatest gift for some is the chance to be reunited with family.
Our program will:
This is more than buying tickets—it’s about reuniting families, restoring dignity, and helping people rebuild their lives with care and stability.
